What Is a Tape Measure? Types and How to Read One

A tape measure is a length-measuring tool with a flexible marked strip. Retractable steel tapes are commonly used for rooms, furniture, and construction measurements; soft fabric or plastic tapes suit body measurements and curved objects. Read the scale consistently

Identify the unit before recording a measurement. On a metric scale, numbered centimeters are divided into millimeters; imperial scales use inches and fractions. Use the hook and lock correctly

On many retractable tapes, the hook moves slightly by design to account for its thickness in inside and outside measurements. Check the tool instructions and inspect a bent or loose hook before relying on it. Use the lock to hold a reading, then guide the blade back slowly; letting it snap back can damage the tape or cause injury.

Measuring inside and outside dimensions

For an outside measurement, hook the tape at the edge and extend it along the object. For an inside measurement, follow the tool instructions for using its hook or case reference. Keep the blade aligned with the distance being measured. A diagonal measurement across a space is longer than its perpendicular width, so check your alignment before recording the result.

Choose the tool for the material

A soft tape can follow a curved surface that would bend or twist a steel blade. A steel tape can span a straight distance that a soft tape cannot support on its own. Neither is ideal for every task. When a measurement is critical, repeat it and verify the reference points before cutting material or ordering an item made to size.
